Max Elwyn Jones was born on July 17, 1947, in Abilene, TX, and peacefully went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2024, at Anson General Hospital in Anson, TX, at the age of 77. Raised in Stamford, TX, Max graduated from Stamford High School in 1965 and later from Howard Payne College in Brownwood, TX, where he met the love of his life, Rita. They were married on December 29, 1970, and shared 50 beautiful years together.
Max’s life was marked by a deep commitment to education, coaching, and service. After coaching in Eden, he was drafted into the Army and stationed in Hawaii, where he earned a Master’s in Education from Pepperdine University in 1974. He pursued farming for 28 yrs and also returned to teaching, eventually ending his career at Cisco Junior College in Abilene.
Max’s love for sports extended beyond coaching; he was the statistician for the Anson Tigers for 29 years and found great joy in playing golf. His passion for history and travel led to cherished family vacations each summer, exploring historical sites and camping along the way.
Above all, Max’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith. A dedicated servant of the Lord, Max served as Treasurer for First Baptist Church in Anson and held numerous leadership roles within the community. His greatest legacy is the Christian foundation he and Rita instilled in their children and grandchildren.
Max is reunited in Heaven with his beloved Rita, his parents N.D. (Doc) and Josie Jones, and his grandson Ryan Hartman. He leaves behind daughter Caryn and husband Rob Hartman of Anson, son Bryan and wife Lori Jones of Papua New Guinea, and daughter Angela and husband Mark Barefield of Burkburnett; 10 grandchildren; 5 brothers; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, dear friends and family members.
